Build small, keep it long
Adding a feature is easy. Filling the hole left by removing one is not. So we hesitate for a long time before adding.
Small things can be fixed. Things that can be fixed get kept. Things that get kept teach you what they actually are, and after a few years you stop guessing at what frustrates people and start knowing.
The large things built quickly have, on the whole, disappeared before we did.
